PREPARE YOUR BEDS FOR MULCHING:
Before applying Texas Native® products, put down a weed barrier. You can put down 8 or 9 layers of newspaper or brown paper grocery bags then mulch on top of this. It will help to keep the weeds down, but it’s also biodegradable so the next time you dig in the bed it will be gone. Plastic and fabric weed barriers are also good at keeping weed seeds from growing up from beneath. A cloth weed barrier works better than a plastic one, but you'll still need to remove any weed seeds that get blown into the top side of your beds by the wind.
CREATE A DISTINCT EDGE AROUND YOUR MULCHING AREA:
Besides defining your beds and creating beautiful contrasting landscapes, edging also prevents mulch from spilling or washing out.
DETERMINE YOUR COLOR:
Decide which Texas Native® mulch will complement your plants and home best. We offer a variety of colors, including:
- Texas Native® Hardwood Mulch - A rich, all natural dark brown mulch
- Texas Native® Cedar Mulch- A medium, rustic blonde / brown mulch
- Texas Native® Black Label Hardwood Mulch - A luxuriously, midnight black dyed mulch
- Texas Native® Rojo Red Hardwood Mulch - A striking, yet tasteful deep red dyed mulch
DECIDE A PROPER DEPTH:
For maximum efficiency, water retention, weed mitigation and root insulation, 3 - 4 inches of Texas Native® mulch is recommended.
NOTE ABOUT DYED MULCHES:
When installing ANY dyed mulches, choose a day when the weather is clear and when no rain is expected in the forecast. Water your plants in BEFORE installing your mulch. Because we use only EPA approved, non-toxic colorants, the dye will only bond to the mulch when it is dried. If water comes into contact with the mulch prior to bonding the dyes can wash off. Once dried, the dyes will be permanently bonded and will not wash off.
